ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Shuddersome: Tales of Poe presents a series of stories by Poe, adapted for the stage.

The performance opens with “The Tell-Tale Heart”, a story of a horrific crime where the guilty party is driven mad by an overwhelming sense of guilt.

“The Bells” follows, taking the audience on a rhythmic journey beginning with playful sounds that progress into ominous melodies.

The story of “The Oval Portrait” is presented without dialogue through movement, and presents the notion that great art requires great sacrifice.

“Lionizing”, one of Poe’s rare comedies, is a timeless satire showcasing the absurdities of fame, and how far one might be willing to go to be famous.

“The Raven”, perhaps the most recognizable work of Poe, follows the path of grief after death. The story illustrates how distractions are used to combat sorrow but inevitably lead to the realization that death is finite.

The evening concludes with “The Masque of the Red Death,” a striking allegory about a prince who attempts to escape a deadly plague by hiding within his castle, only to confront the inescapable reality of mortality.

Together these stories move between psychological horror, haunting poetry, and satiric truth, showcasing the range and impact of Poe’s work.
